The Hambledon Village Shop, a cherished hub of our community, is in urgent need of a new roof. For years, this shop has been more than just a place to buy essentials; it has been a gathering spot, a source of local pride, and a lifeline for many. We now face a pressing challenge to ensure its doors remain open and its structure safe.

Twenty years ago, the Hambledon Village Trust purchased the shop (and the attached Pendle Cottage) shortly after it had reopened as a community venture. Only when the Trust stepped in could its long-term future be assured.

Over the intervening years the Trust has carried out major improvements to enable the shop to compete in modern trading conditions. The addition of a thriving café and deli counter, and an upgrade of the Post Office, alongside well-stocked shelves has made it a popular destination. In addition, the Trust has been up-grading the cottage.

It is hard to imagine life in Hambledon without the shop as a major focus. However, a big challenge lies ahead. The 18th Century building is in urgent need of a new roof, and the financial support of villagers is vital if this is to be achieved.

Tiles have been falling off, beams need to be examined, there is no underlay and any insulation has worn thin. The flat roof over the shop frontage requires attention. Piecemeal repairs and patching are no longer a viable option.

It is estimated that the work involved will cost in the region of £100,000. This is a sum way beyond the financial means of the Trust. Its only income is from the rents it charges to the shop and cottage tenant.

The time has come to launch another fund-raising campaign. Your generous donation will help us secure a new roof, safeguarding this vital resource for future generations. Please join us in preserving this cornerstone of Hambledon’s heritage. Every contribution makes a difference. Thank you for your support!
